Academic Programs

The Pennsylvania State University, Harrisburg, PA

The program prepares master's level graduates to function in

community settings as applied behavior analysts, and to provide

the academic training necessary for graduates to apply for

national board certification in behavior analysis. The overall

model emphasizes the core areas of the discipline including the

scientific basis of behavior analysis, as well as how biological,

social, and individual differences affect human behavior.

Training will emphasize the development of both assessment and

intervention skills. The program will prepare graduates to work

in hospitals, medical schools, mental health centers, health

maintenance organizations, a wide variety of educational

settings, forensic settings, research facilities, and in center-

and home-based programs for individuals with autism and

developmental disabilities. The program is intended for both part

time and full-time students. Courses will be scheduled for fall

and spring semesters. Admission is in the fall and spring

semesters only.

Punishment on Trial: A Resource Guide to Child Discipline (2004)

Author: Ennio Cipani

Recently Ennio Cipani contacted PennABA with this email:

Dear ABA Colleague:

I have recently acquired the electronic rights to my 2004 book, Punishment on trial: A resource guide to child

discipline. I want to make it freely available to your members. I have attached a pdf file for you

(PoTwholetextEnnio.pdf) as well as the contract stipulating my rights to the electronic version of the book (see

other PDF file look under 8.4). This e-text can also be found at www.ecipani.com/PoT.pdf (make sure to put

caps where indicated) to allow faculty to simply give students the url when assigning reading from this text.

You can post this web site in your newsletter, and for people looking for BCBA CE’s the book and test can be

found at http://orlandobehaviorhealth.org/CE.html.

The following paragraph is taken from a review by Meissner & Celiberti appearing at

www.asatonline.org/suggreading/bookreviews.htm.

The strengths of this book lie in the excellent use of research studies as well as case studies to further

illustrate the important considerations that surround punishment. The clinical case studies reflect a helpful

mix of clinical and non-clinical examples across an array of settings. Readers will easily see their own

children mirrored in many of the examples. Dr. Cipani skillfully blends vivid examples and reference to

published research in a manner that will satisfy professional and savvy consumers, yet not overwhelm a

parent who may be picking up a book of this sort for the first time. Striking that balance can be a daunting

task, yet the author has succeeded in meeting the needs of diverse readers.

If you could make your members aware of this free material, I would appreciate it.

Ennio Cipani

Treating Eating Problems of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

and Developmental Disabilities (2007)

Authors: Keith E. Williams, Ph.D. and Richard M. Foxx, Ph.D.

This is a two-part book written for caregivers and professionals who work with children with feeding problems. It

presents behavioral interventions and approaches on solving a child’s resistance to eating.

Part One was specifically written for teachers, parents, and caregivers with no prior professional experience or

training on feeding problems.

Part Two was written for professionals, providing detailed information on how to apply behavioral assessment

and developing individualized interventions based on a child’s eating behaviors.

The behavioral interventions and procedures presented in this book can also be integrated into oral motor or dysphagia

therapy. Includes references and brief descriptions.

CONTROVERSIAL THERAPIES FOR DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES (2005)

Authors: John W. Jacobson (ed.), Richard M. Foxx (ed.), and James A. Mulick (ed.)

"In this important new book, Drs. Jacobson, Foxx, and Mulick have provided a valuable resource for

parents and professionals seeking to understand what constitutes effective intervention for various

developmental disabilities, including autism. Chapter selections are characterized by consistently high

standards of research and scholarship--yet, unlike many other academic treatises, most of the

contributions here are written in a clear, accessible style. This collection offers both the professional and

the lay reader a wealth of information about current fads and controversies in developmental disabilities.

More importantly, the work offers insights into the genesis of such fads, and an intensive education in

how to make science-based treatment decisions in the face of competing claims."
